London Irish – Where Community Meets Tradition

London Irish – Where Community Meets Tradition

Chris Kane31 Mar - 08:50

A fabulous weekend of social and sporting activity across the club.

What an extraordinary few days it has been, beginning on Friday when London Irish took over the City of London. In a tradition now approaching its 50th year, more than a hundred members and guests gathered for lunch at Trinity House beside the Tower of London. This historic venue, rich in maritime heritage, provided a fitting backdrop for the presentation of the club’s Six Nations Rugby Writers’ Forecast Competition award.
The occasion blended ceremony, camaraderie and the unmistakable spirit of London Irish and rugby football. This year’s award—first inaugurated in 1977—was presented to former Guardian and Sunday Telegraph rugby correspondent Barrie Fairall, who received the beautifully sculpted trophy created by Aaron Dunlop.
Events like this are great London Irish days out and would not be possible without the long-standing support of city law firm Anthony Gold. For anyone seeking reliable legal advice, their contact details are included in the footnote.
Adding to the fun, Vince and Sandi Gillespie—long-time supporters and sponsors of the event—commissioned a replica Leprechaun Trophy brooch to be auctioned in aid of club funds. A remarkable and unique piece of jewellery, it drew plenty of admiration on the day.
The celebrations continued well into the evening and set the tone perfectly for day two at Hazelwood. Saturday saw the club mark St Patrick’s Day in style, with around 130 supporters gathering to watch the Wild Geese take on Oxford Harlequins. It proved to be an entertaining match, with the home side securing a 50–21 victory.

We enjoyed a packed house for lunch sponsored by Clonakilty Food, and, under the careful stewardship of Gerry Gallagher, welcomed back many friends from far and wide. The day was made even more special by a surprise visit from IRFU President John O’Driscoll. A London Irish man through and through, John returned to his spiritual home and delighted the room with memories of his playing days—made all the more poignant by the presence of many former teammates. It was heartening to hear of his strong support for grassroots rugby and our efforts to secure Hazelwood for community use.
The Club was also delighted that our partners in the Community Bid could join the celebrations. Representatives from Brentford Community Sports Trust, the Irish Embassy, local councillors and the GAA were all in attendance, enjoying the occasion and tucking into a selection of the world‑famous Clonakilty black pudding. It was equally pleasing to share the day with directors of our new neighbours, the London Broncos, strengthening the growing sense of connection across our wider sporting community.
Ronan MacManus and his band ensured the party carried on long into the evening, rounding off a memorable celebration of sport, heritage and friendship.
Looking back on the last few days, it was another powerful reminder of how community and tradition sit at the heart of London Irish Amateur RFC. Long may it continue.
