London Irish Wild Geese team for Winchester

London Irish Wild Geese team for Winchester

Matthew Cassin13 Oct 2023 - 18:46

Ryan Gregory has announced his Geese team for tomorrow's clash with Winchester.

This Saturday, the Wild Geese take on third place in the league for the second game week in a row. Winchester come here looking to show that their draw against Guildford was not a representation of their capabilities in theis league and defeeating an unbeaten London Irish side at home would be the perfect example of their intent this season.

The Wild Geese, in an unfamiliar position of having consecutive wins under their belt, are looking to see how far this streak, the likes of which haven't been seen at Hazelwood since the ladies went 16 from 16. A joint club record in fact, with the best Geese record being their own 16 game win streak in 2009/2010. The year we actually last played against Winchester, winning both legs of the contest. That season saw us promoted from London 2 South West to London 1 South (The equivalent level to our current one. We actually got promoted into National 3 London & South East at the end of the season following a 21-14 playoff win against Sidcup. Two promotions in two years, shall we dare to dream again?)

The Wild Geese side for the weekend sees a few changes as players have started to pick up a few niggles from the first five games. There is however an unchanged front row of Oisín Byrne, Harry Roffey and half-centurion, Rory Harrison.

The second row see its 5th different combination this season as Ryan Paige is called up to accompany myself for his debut.

An unchanged back row from the starting team against Tottonians as Gomez, Wheeler-Holes and another half-centurion, Ed Harte look to test their attaking power against the best defence in the league.

The halfback pairing of scrumhalves, George Phillips and Ross Lewis at 9 and 10 respectively will again look to unlock the centres and outside backs this weekend. A task that if they get right, will hopefully cause massive trouble for Winchester.

In the centres, Joe Srokowski gets his first start of the season as he replaces the injured Theo Barkway-Hall. The indomitable Henry Fuller (Henry that means you're really good and hard to beat) is also hoping to show the Hazelwood crowd his magic again this week as the leading try scorer in the squad and possibly the league too, I'll have to check.

Finishing off the starting fifteen is the ever magical Corkman, Finn Carey on one wing. The ever hungry and passionate James Madle on the other wing and the ever puzzled and confused Tadhg O'Hagan at full back.

On the bench we've got crowd favourite Mufaro Mutaurwa covering the front row. Making his first Wild Geese game since an unfortunate electric vehicle accident after the Beaconsfield loss last October is Derry Gleeson. Capable of playing both hooker and back row, don't let his size fool you. The proud Limerick man never wanting to let the opposition feel safe on the pitch, his big tackles and evasive running are sure to cause some hassle for Winchester. Finally, we've got new recruit and injury cover for Killian while he's out, its Rory Damant. Rory joins us with a dazzling rugby CV having played for London Scottish and Richmond in the past. His experience is sure to bring another gear to this attack and we cannot wait to see him make his debut tomorrow.

Make sure you're down there nice and early as the game kicks off at 14:00 due to the World Cup quarter finals taking place in the evening.

He still trains and plays when he can but what Scotty really loves, as is the case with so many people involved with this club is that it feels like a second family. Throughout tha last few years, Scotty's support of adult rugby has been unrelenting. In his day job he is the CEO of Atlas Security Doors which he founded 30 years ago. Many thanks again Scotty, much love.
