The Irish Deliver a Season-Opener to Remember

The Irish Deliver a Season-Opener to Remember

Liam Moore-Saxton

What a way to kick off the season

This weekend at Hazelwood had everything - hard-fought rugby, a packed clubhouse, and a rare visit from rugby royalty. If this is the standard for round one, the year ahead is shaping up nicely.

Saturday: Irish Set the Tone Early

The first match and first pre-match lunch of the season saw the Geese open proceedings on Saturday afternoon, and the club was buzzing well before kick-off. Lunch was near capacity, with the Emerald Club, the B's and the guard of honour from our Minis section all turning out in numbers to welcome Aylesbury to Hazelwood for the opening clash of the campaign.

From the first whistle, it was clear the Irish meant business. A blistering start saw them race into a significant early lead - the kind of lead that puts real pressure on the opposition to respond. To their credit, Aylesbury didn't fold; they dug in for a full, physical contest and made the Irish work for every point. But the early damage proved too much to overcome, and the game finished 60-42 in favour of the Irish. A strong marker laid down for the season ahead.

The physical nature of the contest did come at a cost. Our open side flanker Josh Bywater took a nasty knock during the game and was taken to hospital as a precaution. We're pleased to say it was nothing too serious, and thanks to our great physio team, Josh is already on the road to recovery. Get well soon, Josh - the whole club is behind you.

Sunday: The Black Ferns Come to Hazelwood

If Saturday was about competitive intensity, Sunday was about inspiration. Hazelwood played host to a genuinely special occasion as the Black Ferns NZ took to the training pitch to run out with our girls' youth squad. For our young women to train alongside some of the best in the world in women's rugby is the kind of experience that stays with a player - the sort of morning that can shape how a young athlete sees her own potential in the game.

And that wasn't even the whole story. Hazelwood was packed from end to end, with youth and minis sessions running throughout the day alongside the Black Ferns visit - a genuinely jam-packed showcase of the club at every level, from the littlest minis to full internationals sharing the same turf.

A Season Opener to Remember

Between the Irish's statement win, Aylesbury's battling effort, and a training session most clubs only dream of hosting, this was about as complete a season-opening weekend as Hazelwood could have asked for. If the energy from these two days is any indication, it's shaping up to be a memorable year for the club.

And to top the weekend off, London Irish U16 Nomads beat Sutton & Epsom 41 to 17 - a fantastic result to close out a brilliant opening round for the club.
