It's very difficult to write a match report from a game that had around 25 scrums, 13 penalties and 8 line outs. Think sometimes refs need to let the game flow at this age rather than blowing up for so many minor infringements, but hey who am I to argue.
Irish A’s took on Battersea on a perfect winters day and electing to receive Battersea kicked off deep into our 22 and for first 5 mins we defended. With plenty of knock-on's from both sides scrums were plentiful and we matched our oppo on attack but defensively we didn’t. 7 min in and with a few missed tackles we conceded 5 points and with a missed conversion we were still in the game 0 - 5. We did look the better team for the following 15 min again on attack but we just couldn’t get over the try line. Best move came when from the break down and quick ball by both half backs had Isaac and Mitch linking up well in the center to get us with in touching distance of the try line but just not over. We had a few more attempts at trying to cross the line with some good attacking runs from the backs but when it came down to the breakdown we just didn’t commit the numbers to secure the ball for further phases. 0 – 5 is how first half finished
Second half was a scrappy affair but with some fresh legs on the pitch Irish pushed forward and although we struggled in the line outs (as did the ref) our scrums were strong and the pack didn’t concede a scrum all game. We also had some strong tackling from Robbie, Dan and Jo in the lose 10 min in that frustrated the oppo and kept us deep in there half however at the breakdown we were judged to have knocked on and were pinged for it. With yet another scrum Ironsides were on the charge but a huge tackle by Tommy saw the ball dislodged and with a little hack through by James and with a burst of speed saw us score under the posts and with the conversion we led 7 - 5
With 10 min left of the clock the boys did what was needed to see out the game and notch up another win against Battersea
